'Last Spring: The Maps', Vol. 1

----

People who read this blog with regularity and in detail know that I'm currently working on a new theater piece/installation work with Gisele Vienne, Stephen O'Malley, and Peter Rehberg titled 'Last Spring'. You also likely know that it will take the form of a very large, walk-through, interactive labyrinth disguised as a haunted hotel and that the 'performers' will be a largish cast of individuated 'teenaged'robots. You probably also know that, between now and then, we're creating a number of related, so-called prequel works, the first of which is 'Last Spring, a Prequel' which I documented on the blog and is currently on tour. The second of these prequels is a zine edited by Gisele and myself and designed by Stephen called 'Last Spring: The Maps' that is being published in bilingual French/English editions and will feature articles, illustrations, interviews, etc. relating to the construction of and ideas behind 'Last Spring'. There will be four issues in all, and they are appearing as part of a magazine project coordinated by the artists Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Philippe Parreno and Jean-Max Colard entitled 'Le Cooperative Fanzine'. The first issue of 'LCF' was published last month, and, thus far, it has been quite difficult to find due to a distribution scheme that is, to say the least, idiosyncratic and limited. So, I thought I would let anyone who's interested check out our zine's first issue right here on the blog today, and you will see jpegs of it below.

p.s. Hey. Between the hassle of enlarging/ reading jpegs and the amount of stuff in the zine, please feel free to save this post for a rainy day. ** Misanthrope, Eek! You were up awfully early for a guy with a strip club in his immediate future, and don't think I don't appreciate it. So, did you turn straight or what? ** Postitbreakup, Hi, Josh. Thanks for the 'TMS' excitement. Well, depending on Kiddiepunk Press's willingness and availability, you might get to read a chapbook full of outtakes from 'TMS' soonish, if you want. Brent Corrigan's dick ... wait, that's that wad of stuff on the dark side of his ass, right? ** David Ehrenstein, A most marvelous weekend around here, and please feel the depth of my bow. ** Tosh, Hey, Tosh. Oh, that was subtle, ha ha. Yes, secret handshake, and I apologize for the shaking's slow motion. ** Patrick deWitt, Greetings, buddy. Got the intro. Everything's set. You continue to rock harder and harder. ** Pilgarlic, Hey. Yeah, I finally found your email not an hour ago as it had, for reasons known only to gmail, arrived in my spam folder, and I will devour the review today, thank you kindly. ** Alan, I don't mind telling you that you scared the shit out of me with that dangling technique, ha ha. Thank you, man. That means a whole lot to me. And, sure, questions if and when. Yeah, thank you so much, Alan. ** Bernard Welt, Weirdly sadly, or something, the weather here got all blue and warm enough to tan skin this weekend. Other than that, you would have recognized everything that's happened since you sadly departed, and yet you're missed, B. Thank you for the title reminder because it did fade away from my mind. 'Vertigo, big, dark theater = nice. I've heard of that Stephane Moussu film. Do tell how/if it lives up. ** Richard chiem, Well, good morning, Richard, and thank you very much! ** Math, Dudette, I liked the vid/tune a lot. It has this weird melancholy and oozy, creepy, compelling thing going on that's kind of really riveting. Yeah, big kudos to you and your co-conspirators. And I loved seeing LA through your eyes and favorites. I like the 7 years thing. I like predetermined enclosures. ** A.r., Right back at you, shoulder-wise and vis-à-vis email/great news later. ** 'Matt', Story first, okay, cool. The performance piece sounds inherently interesting, but, yeah, maybe a tweak wouldn't hurt. What did you come up with? Dude, thanks about 'HHU'. Mixing it up with Keith Mayerson was a joy and honor, obviously. Galley: I'll try. Let me see what I can do. It took them about two months and multiple nudges to get a galley to Alan after I asked them, to forewarn you. Do my best, I will. ** Faro, Hello, welcome to the blog, and thank you a lot. I've just gone over to your blog and looked at your works initially. The drawings are fantastic! I'll have to either get my b'friend to translate your writings or use a translation service because my French comprehension is embarrassingly weak, but, yes, your work looks really fascinating. It's a real pleasure to discover. Thank you! Everyone, Faro, who arrived in the comments arena for the first time this weekend, is a French artist named Didier Pedro, and he posts some of his works on his blog, and they are very, very interesting, and I highly recommend you go check them out both for your aesthetic delectation and to welcome him. Go here. I'll spend more time with your work today, and please feel free to join in here again anytime. ** Ken Baumann, Well, now that the weekend is history, take some week warm wishes. I'm talking 7 whole days of warm wishes, man. But of course I hope to see you along the way. ** Steevee, Hey, man. I do know of Googoosh. I wouldn't, though, had there not been a really interesting documentary about her on the Arte channel a few weeks ago. Very odd, interesting stuff. She has a following here. ** Marcus Whale, Hey, bud. Oh, a Bandcamp page, excellent! I'll spin what's there when I get done here. Excited! Oh, maybe I'll ... Hold on. Everyone, Marcus Whale, whose numerous and magnificent talents include a hell of a grasp on music, has a band called Collarbones, and he has kindly given us a way to discover what said band sounds like. Care to join me in this discovery? You should, you know. Anyway, I'll let him finish the intro: 'Anyway, for Collarbones you can just go to bandcamp, which has a few singles from the album we released and a mixtape of some covers and remixes, or the whole album is up somewhere on nodata.tv.' I'll listen up closely, and give you my thoughts. Iceage: mm, post-post-punk? Danish, four teenaged guys, adventurous hardcore, very exciting, I think. The Weekend, okay, I'll go find them/that, thanks! ** Collarbones, Is that you, Marcus? If so, well put! If not, well put, new guy! ** David, Ha ha, that was nice. Your mom. 'Ugly Man' counts as two books? What a gyp! It should be half of a twofer if anything. ** Schoolboyerrors, Sun here too! And it's still out there today, if my window is to be believed. Don't know that Hopps book. Hm, I'll hunt it. I had an odd but ultimately nice weekend, thank you. And you? ** Chris Cochrane, Concision is always good, right? Okay, maybe not always but usually. Thank you for recording the show. You won't regret it. I swear to motherfucking God, you won't regret it. My favorite William Vollman book is 'The Rainbow Stories'. ** Chilly Jay Chill, Hey, Jeff. I am still enjoying it, much moreso even as it grows. Report when I finish it. I read your book review piece this weekend. I think I saw the link on Facebook. It's a very good piece. It doesn't feel cursory. I thought the reviews were very astute and graceful and smart. Let me ... Everyone, d.l., writer, website maestro, editor, etc. Chilly Jay Chill who also goes by the name Jeff Jackson, has begun reviewing books for the site CharlotteViewpoint, and the first set of reviews is up, and he covers the newest books by the young masterpiece-slingers Blake Butler, Michael Kimball, Joshua Cohen, and Scott McClanahan. I strongly suspect you need to read that. Here. Superb work, man. That's very exciting about the new Roussel translation. I'm starving for that now. I didn't know about the new 'Locus Solus' translation. Hunh. Yeah, I think that is my favorite by him. But he did not put a foot wrong ever, as far I can tell. ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Hi. I'm holding out a candle towards 'The Avengers', but I know what you mean. I didn't get a notebook yet. I had every opportunity, but I got all lazy, I don't know why. Maybe today. The oops story with your friend's roommate was nice. Well, nice, okay. I liked the solar dazzle beginning especially. I always feel like wearing a bra must be such a hassle, but maybe it isn't? Is a cookie cake exactly what it sounds like? Like a cake-sized cookie? I've never heard of such a thing before. 'Angel' really does get better after Season 1 and after that Scottish-y character leaves the show. The actor who played him died, which is sad. But, you know, the show was better without him, I have to say. Maybe you should just switch to Season Two. By Season Three you'll be hooked, I'll wager. Then it's clear sailing. Sorry to hear about the angry texts. Your friends were kind of needy, it seems like. But their need is kind of nice, I guess. It was sad to see you-know-who's name reappear in your comment. I understand. My weekend: Uh, okay, let's see. I don't think I did much at all other than stay around my room mostly and work or try to. Like I said, nobody's around, so that probably encouraged me to be reclusive. I think Gisele got back last night, so that will help. I did some blog post work and emailing and read some books I'm reading. Saturday was kind of a wash, I think. Saturday evening began a drama, though. Yury called to say he was going out for drinks with some people from his work, which isn't that unusual, nor was his staying out until past my bedtime 'cos I go to sleep earlyish. Anyway, when I woke up on Sunday, he hadn't come home. That was very unlike him, so I started worrying. I called him a few times, but he didn't answer. I started thinking, oh fuck, what do I do, call the police, or ... ? Anyway, I was stressed out. He finally arrived about noon, and I guess he'd way overindulged in ye olde drink and illicit substances and wound up at some after hours club with his co-workers, and he'd totally lost track of time and his sense of reality, so he was both high/out of it and freaked out that he'd overindulged because he very rarely even drinks. So, yesterday was a day of him sometimes napping and sometimes talking about how shocked he was to have gotten so out of control, and what a big lesson he had learned, and I was, like, yeah, that was weird. We were going to go see the Harry Potter movie, but he eventually crashed out asleep, no surprise, so I think we're going to do that tomorrow. Other than dealing with that, I didn't do much at all, other than some internet based blahblah, so Sunday was strange, but it's all fine now. That was my weekend in a hand basket. As for today, we shall see. How was your Monday, man? ** Tender prey, Hi, Marc. You sound like you used the vacation to the richest. Nice. Yeah, if you see this before you leave by some chance, do call me if you have time when you get to Gare du Nord 'cos I would totally love to see you guys today! ** Okay, like I said, there's our zine up there to check out or not or whatever. Be good. See you tomorrow.
