p.s. Hey. A forewarning that I got really crappy sleep last night, and pretty I'm out of it as a consequence. My household is a stress-filled one at the moment, and that's the culprit. Otherwise, the fashion show I mentioned yesterday was quite cool and fun, and I'll say whatever there is to say about that down below. Yury snapped a lot of pix, so you may well get something of a look fat it or yourselves here soon. Okay, I'll dive. ** Nick Hudson, Hey, man. Sorry I got cut off before your comment made the cut yesterday. That band sounds swell. I'll be on it, and enjoy the upcoming days and days of love. ** GLOSSOLALIA, That's a new moniker for you, or new to me. Interesting. If it were up to me, Mr. OogieBoogie would be yours. Cool on the LA and NYC shows. I will try hard to manipulate my travels accordingly. I'm attentive to the overheard in public, yes, although what with all these French speakers, I mostly hear gist if I'm lucky, but I'm attentive to that. I'm glad you liked my pad. There is something sort of you about it. Why did Gaahl drop out of music? Oh, I guess I can find out. And, yeah, where is Killer Luka? Where are you, Killer Luka? It's been ages. I have no idea. I guess this is where being Facebook friends comes in handy. I'll check her 'status'. Love, me. ** Allesfliest, When I think about prostrate milking, I imagine chafing and soreness and scabs and stuff. But I suppose using baby oil or something helps. I'm guessing human body disposal is a rather time consuming thing. Do you have a fireplace? A really big one? And a can or two of air freshener? ** David, Well, actually we probably don't look at some of the same anatomy sites because, believe it or not, if I find a slave photo I know for almost a fact to be stolen, I don't use it/him. Some weird and probably unnecessary sense of propriety in me or something. ** Tomkendall, Yeah, I was happy when I found that sentence. I hope you get the possible new home. I haven't creased the new Trecartin yet. I'm waiting for a length of peace. Tomorrow, maybe. Much love to you too, bud. ** David Ehrenstein, In fact, the first thing I said to my companions at the conclusion of the runway show yesterday was that it was like watching a really good performance art piece. That was my 'in', as it were. Whoa, Vidal really does dislike Ed, but then that play sounds to have been really asking for it, not that I saw it or even clips from it. Ed's new memoir sounds fun. ** Kier, Unless your 'Orphan' review counters the ones from yesterday, I'm going to skip it. Glad you dug yesterday's slaves. A curious bunch, good texts, yeah. Did you buy the bicycle? What kind? I don't know who did that exact piece of music, but since the British band No Man did the score, I'd guess it's something of theirs. ** Alan, I like Eileen's prose too, no surprise. The books I read and will feature in the post will likely be no surprise either. Yeah, I know and use bookfinder. Alibris is more of an old habit I practice sometimes while the Bookfinder habit gradually replaces it. Thanks, man. ** Stan_cz, Yury needs a lot of luck at the moment, so thanks. What music are they using at the 'Metropolis' screening if any. Seems like there are about a dozen soundtracks by all sorts of bands and musicians floating around out there. ** Dan, Hey, Dan. Congrats on the Great Lakes prize! Let me pass on ... Everyone, if you haven't seen the 'Weak Species' short film and want to, it'll be online and watchable until the end of the week at this location. Great to see you, Dan, and thank you. ** SYpHA_69, Yeah, I live and travel light. Too light. I'm always having to do laundry. But since I have to buy my clothes online from organic clothes websites, and you never know if you're going to get exactly what you think you're getting and want, I procrastinate a lot. ** Flit, But it looks so good on you! It's worth the mess, trust me. ** Pascal, Oh, printing out the novel. That's exciting. I love that moment. I like the title, obviously. I hope you get to see Gluck. I'd like to know what he reads. I'm hoping something new. Man, he is a slow one. A decade between books if we're lucky. The retreat is this weekend, right? ** The Dreadful Flying Glove, You got me on what that phrase means. I can't remember if that text was a babelfish monster or straight from the source. The former would (not) explain it. Oh, okay, give me your rewrite, but, if you can, try to just point out the parts/ sentences/ paragraphs/ whatever that need to be rewritten so I can make the changes strategically only because that link-filled and genius of a post was a bit of a trek to get set up right. But if you need to send me a whole new version, I'll deal. David Thomas lost weight? What next?! I'm going to go hear that album. I've missed hearing Ubu's last ... oh, gosh, bunch of albums, I fear. But I bet I can find a nice, jam-packed torrent that'll take care of my problem. ** Jose, Oh, yeah, 'The Jungle Book', and there were probably other later good things. I tend to possibly arbitrarily make the cut off date concurrent with Walt's death. 'Dumbo' and 'Alice' are incredible. 'Pinocchio' is my fave. I can't wait to see that website you're doing too. Let me know. Let me see. ** Thomas Moronic, Fashion show was cool. I guess I'll try to describe it to Itmpw as best I can considering my spaced out head. ** _Black_Acrylic, Wish I could be there getting shit faced or probably not at your YnY launch, but I'll be happy to just see the thing itself, especially if it's semi-full of your writing. Thanks a lot for the Zurn link! Very helpful in my building of the Zurn post here. I hadn't read about the Tate show being censored until I saw your comment. The UK has been all kinds of censorship crazy lately, it's weird and ominous. ** Bernard Welt, Not only was I not refused entry to the fashion show, I was swept backstage and handed a glass of champagne beforehand. So there, ha ha. The real Anna Wintour is much more charismatic and riveting in person than the Meryl Streep performance, as good as Streep was. More below. ** Steevee, Thanks a million for the Korine film review. Now I'm a hundred times more excited than I was, and I was already very excited. I love all of his films a great deal. I sure hope it gets a distributor here and there. I don't know what being a wolf means precisely. I've seen the term bandied about in that realm, but I've never quite figured out its implications. ** Oscar B, Chrystel told me she was basically just waiting to hear when you wanted to come, so I imagine mid-November will be fine. I'll see her today. Great, great! And I'd love to go to EuroDisney with you for their big Xmas shebang. Yeah, awesomeness in every respect! Tick, tick, ... ** Amccartney, Hey, Alistair! The fashion was totally fun. It's crazy how short such things are. So much build up, and then the show itself only lasts about 7 minutes. That dream sounds pretty realistic, or at least the version of me in it does since, yeah, I simply can not choose between Donald and Daffy. How interesting. It's fallish there already? That's not bad for LA. I'm used to LA temperatures in the 90s upwards until Halloween. It's fully fall here, yum. POL is looking at your novel right now? Well, I'll do a whole lot more than crossing my fingers. I've been meaning to pop into the POL office anyway, so I'll have a nice little schmooze about it. Oh, man, that would be so great! Miss you too. ** NB, Oh, my product at the Rodarte/ Colette store is an ugly smallish cardboard box full of rare things by me, mostly books, the rarest being my 'Tiger Beat' chapbook from 1976, I think. 971 euros is the price. Shall I reserve it for you, ha ha? The oven story gave me the willies. I have a slight phobia about gas leaking ovens. You can't be too careful, so don't, or, rather, do. Do be careful, I mean. ** Chris, I know, weird about the muscles. I think I was feeling benevolent. Oh, that's really great about you getting your way at work. Phew, what a relief, no? More time for music, more time for 'Them', which I need to get in contact with Ish about so we can plan. Have you talked to him lately? ** JW Veldhoen, There's a Mal-0-mar thing going on in NYC? New book? By whom? Apparently, Ariana was here in Paris while I was in LA, which completely sucks. I don't recognize any of those names you love. Weird. I'll let my fingers do the walking and all that. Awesome about the possible group show and film lecture. Do them both, man. You sound really good. I don't remember that scene being in the Warhol version. 'Gothic' ... mm, Ken Russell maybe? ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Well, if beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, then the fact is you just prefer slaves to escorts. Maybe. Yeah, no doubt when we do the Recollets show, it'll be heavily documented and shared here. What a tender Bendy moment. I liked that. Kier says 'Weak Species' will still be up and running on Friday. My day: Post-blog, I wrote some. I had a farewell for twelve days coffee with/for Kiddiepunk here at the Recollets' charming cafe also in the company of the farewell-wishing Scott Treleaven. Then I think I wrote some more. Then Scott, Paul P, Yury, and I headed over to the Rochas fashion show, which took place at 5 pm in the grand hall of the Musee de l'Homme on the Place du Trocadero. We got there early, and some in-groupish guy who Scott and Paul know lead us inside and backstage where we talked to Marco Zenini, who was super nice, and hung out watching the models get ready and so on. The legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour arrived backstage to chat with Marco and get a peek at the clothes, and it was like God had made an appearance. I guess her coming backstage is a rare and massive honor and a positive sign from the heavens and so on. A gaggle of paparazzi trailed her, flash flash flash, and there was a stunned and electrified silence in the room, and people were stumbling to clear a path for her, and it was very intense and just fascinating. Then we all took our seats to watch the show, and Wintour and her equally legendary Vogue cohort Grace Coddington were sitting right across from us, which was cool. The models did that famous horse-clomping, staring straight ahead, single-file, widely spaced apart runway parade thing like you always see in the movies to a song from the newest album by The Horrors, and this huge clot of maybe 70 photographers snapped and flashbulbed them wildly at the point where they made the turn to parade back towards the dressing room. It was all very icy and glam and chic and precise and riveting. Then the show ended, and we went backstage to congratulate Marco and drink more champagne and ogle people and stuff, and Marco gave Paul one of the handmade fake green carnations from one of the models' outfits, and he suggested that he and I might meet for a drink this week, which I'm of course happy to do, and we eventually headed home by subway. I ate, Yury ate. And then a bunch of stressful stuff happened, first re: the difficulties involved in Yury getting a new job, a wrench got tossed in those works because -- long story very brief -- due to a technical issue unfairly foisted on Yury by T&G, he can't legally get a new job for three weeks, and this is a real problem for reasons I don't have the energy to go into. Then -- another very long, complicated story in a brief, necessarily vague form -- my agent got in touch to let me know that an indie film producer who shall remain nameless and who has recently had my novel 'My Loose Thread' under option until it expired this week, and who had seemed like a good, decent, passionate guy up until now, which is why I personally lobbied for him to be given the option even though he's quite inexperienced and could barely pay anything for the option, is now flipping out and claiming that, via some bizarre interpretation he's made of the contract he signed, he now owns my novel, and he can do whatever he wants with it or not for the rest of his life, and he's threatening a lawsuit if we try to take the novel away from him, and so my agent's lawyers are now involved, and it's kind of an insane, stressful mess, which is the other reason -- on top of the joblessness-related stress -- that I barely slept last night. So that was my mixed up day. How was yours? ** Blendin, No, I did not get dressed up. I looked as I looked whenever it was that you last glimpsed me. Megadeth was an interesting choice. Oh, I think I'll stay away from delving into the Polanski issue on the blog for the same reason that I try to stay away from politics and religion as best I can. There's too much hysteria around the Polanski thing right now, and I'll avoid a possible heated situation and the related hassle that heated situations bring to my end of the p.s., but anyone else here is more than free to talk about it here, of course. I'll just give you a one sentence answer to the question: I think he should be freed. Sure, getting it to me by the 10th is fine. I'll go ahead and leave one day that week blank for you. ** James, Sounds good. My phone numbers will be in your box promptly. Where in Paris are you staying? ** Misanthrope, Interesting question. I wish I was more awake. Um, I had plans, but I never thought of them as goals, like things that I would need to do in order to know whether what I did was a success or not. I decided to become a writer, but I was already writing when I decided that, and it was more about being a more serious writer. I mean I was ambitious and driven. Maybe deciding to write the George Miles Cycle was setting myself a goal. But other than that, it was more like I had dreams: being published by Grove Press, being published and respected in France, having my work respected in some way that I could believe in, and so on. It wasn't really about choosing goals and then focusing on making those particular goals. I think to me it's more of a general thing of trying to see if I can be my own idea of what a 'great' writer is, and working as hard as I can to be as good a writer as my abilities will let me be, and then letting the chips fall where they may or whatever. Setting goals seems too predetermined to me. I don't think I've ever known myself well enough to be able to decide what I'm capable of doing and then doing that. Does that make sense? What about you? Do you have goals? Do you think about the future in that way? ** Alec Niedenthal, I'll do everything I can to read the piece and write back to you today. So, you think your work is missing something essential but you don't know what that thing would be? Is that what you mean? Can you identify the thing that makes work by others that you really like satisfying or exciting or whatever that you think is missing from yours? Do you think there is something essential that you need to include? I ask because I don't think I've ever thought about my work in that way. I tend to think I have what I have, and it's more about fashioning my technique and style and stuff to the point where it best displays what I want to do or brings it out into the writing most effectively or something? Yeah, make sure the offshoot stuff from your relationship isn't slipping an unnecessary poison into your writing. I mean, that can happen. ** I need caffeine. I'll go get some. I present another Halloween post to you today. Now that it's October, I feel less inclined to restrain my Halloween love, so such posts will be coming more often until the month's end. I think that's the long and short of it. See you tomorrow.
