well...how can I not? Graeme on bass no less! I read about the recording session where Malkmus re-recorded "Death And The Maiden" w/ Graeme...but I didn't realize that it was Dr. Downes himself on the 4 string. Nice cuts showing the original vid for the song by The Verlaines. Of course, I can't help but say that The Verlaines version is far superior...but no one can play guitar like Graeme...not even close stylistically.
Okay so The Verlaines have cracked DC's (albeit in an end-run sort of fashion). That warms the rather frigid cockles of my heart. Thanks Dennis. I somehow know you threw that one in just for me.
Funny that Downes is playing a bass line originally played by the great and powerful Jane Dodd (now with Humphreys and Keen--listen to The Overflow sometime)...he sounds so stiff compared to her...never thought I would ever say that about anything he has done so far...but it's Malkmus' slight tweaking of the arrangement that called for such a thing...and very well done indeed.
As to the rest...I return with a certain frequency to these vids...out of curiosity mostly. I have quite a bit of respect for Malkmus...solidified obviously, by his recent choice of having The Verlaines share the bill with him on his recent Australian tour. Nice to give a nod to influences and friends.
We are barely above water...3 weeks sans influx of cash...scary days. But it wouldn't be the season without some sort of meltdown. Maybe I will try to put together a Verlaines day after all...though I suspect that most wouldn't like it...Downes is an acquired taste to say the least (although I can't for the life of me understand why that would be so...???)
much much love to you my friend.
This guy is a genius!
