Seth Plattner's Scariest American Spooky Houses of 2008
Erebus: The World's Largest Haunted House (1:22)
Pontiac, Michigan
'This is the largest haunted house in the nation and a word to weary: if you don't like being touched, don't come here. Everything in Erebus is interactive: people grab you, monsters try and eat you and they cut you...ok, kidding on the last one. But, when they say "if you survive" they kind of mean it. If you can handle that, then come for amazing special effects and state of the art make up. You'll probably leave a little shaky.'
Shocktoberfest (1:09)
Reading, Pennsylvania
'Sporting a haunted prison, a 3D maze and probably the scariest hayride in the country, it's no surprise that Shocktoberfest is one of the most successful haunted houses around. Shocktoberfest is located on an abandoned industrial park that was once home to several large, corrupt institutions, namely the State Psychiatric Hospital and Willow Glen State Penitentiary. The haunted house uses this knowledge to their advantage and creates some of the most realistic and disturbing scenes and story lines of any haunted house in the country.'
Fright Dome at Circus Circus (3:08)
Las Vegas, Nevada
'Fright Dome has reached such a level of notariety that stars such as Michael Jackson and Missy Elliot have risked life and limb to go through it. This place is a huge compound. It features five haunted houses, including the new Zombie Mansion, three haunted ride films, freak shows, 20 rides and attractions and four scare zones. With such an extensive array of frights you'd have to have nerves of steel to go in here and not be scared by something.'
Rocky Point Haunted House (7:55)
Salt Lake City, Utah
'Although this is Rocky Point's last season, come to this one for the make up. Rocky Point employs a large number of Hollywood make up artists who are true professionals at making normal people look horrifying. Many faithful patrons claim this is and always will be the scariest haunted house. They have the typical set ups-graveyards, haunted mansion, classic monsters-but it's the sheer reality that Rocky Point conveys that make it so successful and noteworthy.'
Terror Behind the Walls (8:10)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
'As if prisons aren't scary enought, this haunted house is based in the Eastern State Penitentiary, whose cells once held the likes of Al Capone and "Slick" Willie Sutton. Some of you might recognize this prison from the 90's MTV show "Fear," which forced a few willing young people to spread out and explore the penitentiary alone. But, come Halloween and the TBTW crew takes the history and spookiness of the place and amps up big time. Included this year is "The Experiment," a 3D madhouse complete with a bloodthirsty, psychotic doctor, and the all-new "Night Watch" which puts visitors in the pitch dark, only able to escape with the aid of an eerie flashlight beam.'
The Darkness (2:41)
St. Louis, Missouri
'Ranked by AOL.com as the #3 scariest place in America, The Darkness pops up on every haunted house list due to its unrivaled scenic design. Every single inch of The Darkness is themed, with 100+ animations, 50 live actors, and over 40 realistic Hollywood quality sets. In order to achieve this high magnitude of reality, they have to spend $150,000 just to renovate from last year. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time screaming in the dark.'
Netherworld (4:27)
Atlanta, Georgia
'Netherworld is truly an awe-inspiring haunted house. They deserve particular credit because, though they buy standard animatronics and such, they then take them and re-create and re-invent them to make everything truly unique to their haunted house. They also have arguably the best make-up team in the industry. It would be hard to tell one of their fake dead apart from a real dead person.'
Nightmare: Face Your Fear (1:55)
NYC, New York
'Nightmare is super successful for two main reasons: 1) It is helmed by two off-Broadway producers who know something about effective theatricality and 2) a promo crew went out and polled thousands of locals about the 13 things that scare them the most. What results is 13 rooms in five haunted houses that are designed to play on and intensify emotions, phobias and anxieties. And, considering there is one available in each borough of New York City, they are out to get everyone.'
7 Floors of Hell (0:30)
Cleveland, Ohio
'The name alone will send shivers up your spine, yeah? The structure is massive and actually includes, as the name suggests, seven different haunted houses. It is said to be the longest linear walkthrough of any haunted house. With a 1 million dollar budget, you can bet this haunted house is going to be fancy. The seven haunted houses have, among others, a haunted cemetery, Cellblock 13 (full of dead inmates), the bloody Butchers Block, and, of course, a haunted circus. So you're pretty much going to get every scary thing ever in this one place.'
Haunted Overload (2:05)
Exeter, New Hampshire
'A haunted house that rivals any professional haunted house out there. The elaboration in detail is said to be uncanny and really gives this place a worthy reputation, not to mention the fact that half the proceeds are donated to help the animals of the New Hampshire SPCA. Expect a lot of chainsaws, lots of actors in costumes and fog that makes it virtually impossible to see what's gonna get you next.'
(Oct. 10) - A rare and disabling genetic disorder is causing a 4-year-old boy from upstate New York to grow a second skeleton. Shane Terry suffers from a condition called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, or FOP, which causes muscle and connective tissue to become ossified when damaged, according to the Watertown Daily Times.
For Shane, a simple fall or minor injury can result in a painful swelling that looks like a tumor. The damaged tissue then transforms into bone. "When he was first diagnosed, I wanted to keep him in a bubble," Shane's mother, Kimberly A. Hayes, told the Watertown Daily Times. "Through an FOP group online, I learned that I need to let him be as much of a kid as I can. I have to look at every situation to see which would be the safest for Shane."
Doctors have confirmed more than 600 confirmed cases of FOP around the world, according to the International Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Association.
Michael Myers is better than other serial killers because he has scruples. Real scruples, not some phony "ethics" crap doctors and UN representatives have to subscribe to to make themselves feel important. Michael Myers' Wikipedia page is, like, twice as long as Richard Ramirez's. Ramirez was a dork who had to use guns to get his kicks. Guns are too easy. Michael Myers likes to work with his hands. That's why he's a lot like Jesus.
The thing about Michael Myers is that he could probably do just about any job in the world and be the best at it, but he doesn't concern himself with material wealth. Michael Myers is rich in spirit, and that's all that matters to him. If he wanted to he could hit home runs like Babe Ruth or cycle for days on end like Lance Armstrong. He's been caught on fire so many times he'd make a great fireman, but the only reason he would rush into a burning house would be if some coed was trapped in there and he wanted to hide six inches of steel in her neck before she burned to death. Michael Myers doesn't let the elements do his job for him. Like I said, he is a man of virtue.
Because he can't die Michael Myers tends to survive a lot of things, like getting shot six times and falling out a window or being caught on fire. The artless swine I mentioned look at this as a bad thing, because he's always getting blown up and shot in every movie. Michael Myers may have been born in a sewer system from the ancient whispers of a Druid curse, but he's not invincible. When you get capped in the eye or karate-kicked out a third-story window, you need some downtime. It's a good thing that one of his hidden skills is "laying very still for a long time". I can only hope that, in writing this, I have helped raise a crucial point: Why Michael Myers is the biggest badass ever. He's suffered two fatal wounds for every one person he's killed, but he refuses to die. He's so calm, so austere.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sued a publishing company to withdraw a Sarkozy doll that comes with a "voodoo manual" telling readers to plant pins in it. The doll is emblazoned with some of Sarkozy's most famous quotes such as "Get lost you pathetic a***hole" -- his words to a bystander who refused to shake his hand at a farm show last year. Readers are encouraged to plant pins in the quotes.
"Nicolas Sarkozy has instructed me to remind you that, whatever his status and fame, he has exclusive and absolute rights over his own image," his lawyer Thierry Herzog wrote to publishers K&B in a letter published by newspaper Le Monde. Nicholas Sarkozy has issued legal proceedings against the firm. Herzog said Sarkozy would sue the publishing firm if it didn't respond and pull the product. K&B has issued 20,000 copies of the manual and doll.
According to a widespread belief, voodoo worshippers can plant pins in dolls representing their enemies to curse them from afar. However, voodoo experts say the practice has been widely misunderstood and misrepresented by outsiders.
'According to the Satanic Calendar Halloween, October 31st is a night for Human sacrifice. (31 All hallow's Eve (Halloween): One of the two most important nights of the year. Attempts are made to break the bond which is keeping the doors to the underworld closed. Blood and sexual rituals. Sexual association with demons. Animal and human sacrifice - male or female.) I'm sure you can see that most if not all of these names listed had something to do with Hollywood. I realize that the famous or semi-famous would be newspaper worthy to mention. I also realize that some of these names mention deaths to be related to aids, cancer, automobile accidents, etc. However being on your death-bed puts you in the hospital or under someone else's care for a short while. Easy enough for someone to replace needed medicine with something deadly. Most of these names died in Los Angeles county California. One or two every year on Halloween. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that something sinister is happening in Hollywood. Fame and fortune really does have its price.' -- Robert Howard

The cakes are a scream, um, I mean, they're to die for. Anyways, big fan of cake.
I kind of looked at the discovery of Safe as one would on finding part of the trajectory of a star. If I keep looking, I'll get Closer--and then things really start to shine. Still, without Safe you would not have written all the other stuff. Besides, I'm certain there are at least one or two sentences or scenes that are worth ripping off--don't tell your attorney! I'm acting like a dork.
Top three EATB songs no particular order: 1) Going Up and Monkeys (Crocodiles); 2) No Dark Things (Heaven Up Here); 3) Porcupine (Porcupine); 4) Never Stop (5 Song EP); 5) The Killing Moon (All Night Version 9 Minutes Long).
mmm, leftovers. some of those cakes are stomach-churning in the most curious and tempting ways.
nice van dykes park day, dennis. what's the best album of his to check out after the great 'song cycle'? and were you taken by his arrangements for joanna newsom? you taken by her?
off to see m83 tonight and super excited...
hope's all well with you
Hi Dennis and everybody, I'm a brand new blogger here... the cakes are amazing ( in their own way).
I was wondering, has anybody seen a horror film called REC? Think it's Spanish or something. I read it's good, I've been trying to download it but couldn't.
It's supposed to be the same type as The Blair Witch Project and Cannibal Holocaust: a fake documentary. I like that kind of things, even though everybody knows they're not real. I like the way people love to be deceived...I find it very naive but interesting..
see you
OscarScar
I really liked The Shed. There's a lot happening in its one minute thirty-one secs.
Love those cakes - how clever!
Just a real quickie, Dennis - welcome back to Paris! I've been reading and lurking, finally semi-managing to get a story going for that kidnap thing, although there's now no kidnap - at least, not yet, but if it proves useful one may yet appear. Fucking breakthrough - it only took, what, 6 months??? It's not the story it was, but it's still a story that allows me to say what I want to say. I think. Part of it came about via pushing myself past that 'I've done all this before' feeling - so what?? Everyone wirtes about the same things over and over again.
Anyway, feeling almost normal again and very energised about it all. I'm amazed how this calms me too. I hate being adrift, but maybe adrift is a necessary part of the process?
Did you find any fragments to bring home and inspire you?
Oh, other good news - nick is now a certifed mediator! So any disputes, he's our man:)
