Ghost Story # 7 *

----

* In the early 1980s, I was acquainted with a guy in Los Angeles who was a serious and avid collector of gay porn. One of the more precious strains of his vast collection was gay porn that had a macabre or tragic real life story attached to it. Of course I was particularly fascinated by those items. The guy was kind of a scholar of gay porn and had done a lot of research and amateur detective work on how the porn in his collection was made and who the people involved were. When I moved to NYC in 1983, he gave me duplicates he had of some of those items as a going away present. I found them in a box on my recent LA trip, and I thought I'd share some with you. According to the collector, the photos in this last of the Ghost Story series were originally shot as a combination art project and prank by two first year college students back in the early 70s.  The project was partly undertaken to fuck with their art teacher, a gay man whom they were convinced had the hots for both of them.  The students who devised the work also appear as the models.  The girlfriends of the students shot the photos and were also around to keep them aroused during the photo shoot.  The students turned the photo sequence into a mock -porn magazine called 'An Eye for an Eye' which they published on the school's printing press in a small edition and handed out at an event in the school's gallery.  During this event, while in the midst of a heated argument about something with the art teacher, the student with the headband slipped on some spilled wine and fractured his skull so severely that he went into a coma and died several months later.  The student with the moustache, who'd had quite a bit to drink, thought the faculty member had tried to grope his friend, and that his friend had fallen while trying to get away from the teacher.  He attacked, beating the teacher so badly the man had to be hospitalized.  The student with the moustache was convicted of assaulting the teacher and spent a year in prison.  During his prison term, he began a correspondence with the teacher he'd assaulted.  During the course of the correspondence, he confessed to having come to the realization while incarcerated that he was gay.  When he got out of prison, he moved in with the teacher he'd assaulted, and they became lovers.  But after a few months out of prison, he decided that he wasn't gay and had been brainwashed into thinking he was gay by his fellow prisoners.  He stayed in the relationship with the teacher because he had no money and nowhere else to go, but they fought constantly.  One night the teacher confessed that he had in fact groped the student with the headband at the school event and that the student had in fact fallen while trying to get away from him.  The ex-student with the moustache flew into a rage and killed the teacher then contacted the ex-girlfriend who had taken the porn photos of his friend and him.  She hid him from the police for a couple of weeks until he was found and arrested.  He was convicted of murder and sent back to prison where he hung himself shortly after being incarcerated.  A few years later, the woman who had been the murderer's girlfriend met my porn collecting acquaintance at a dinner party, told him the story, and, upon his request, sent him a handful of the copies of 'An Eye for an Eye' that she still had in her possession.

Now THAT's a story.
Aren't the Ghost Stories a book now?
When we were at Les mots a la bouche a couple weeks ago, I was looking at Renaud Camus' books Tricks, where he just tells the story of like 27 anonymous sexual encounters, and remembering how pissed-off I felt that once he did that, no one else really could. The Ghost Stories is just such a great idea.

astounding series, dennis. so sad it came to an end. the book idea is good, though...

BTW yesterday's bellmer and eluard was excellent too, but i failed to comment.

i don't comment every so often 'cos i feel that dropping a letter just to say "everything you do is great" is a bit lame, but what the hell, it is...

LOVE

Oh I LOVE Renaud Camus, Bernard -- and so does Gore Vidal.

Is he still alive?

Dennis...there can be little doubt as to why I love and respect you so very much...unlike so many in my life, you continue to feed me...it's so linear as to be unique (even across the obvious breaks)...thanks does not suffice...yeah, you're my friend (in my mind), but you're so much more...astonishingly beautiful artistry...as ever...and ever. You have no idea--I imagine--exactly what your vision (visions) mean and have meant to me. Today was beautiful in a rather indefinable way...I should think that you wouldn't have it any other way. How you came into my life remains a mystery...but I have always fantasized your benevolence as a saving grace...most certainly you are that. Thanks Dennis...my heart is yours. (public displays like are difficult at best for me...but you wrenched it out...xx)
